Halloween is almost here! As exciting as delicious treats and trick-or-treat sounds, if your child wears braces, you may be nervous about Halloween treats. You are most likely worried about broken wires, bent wires or even worse, emergency appointments. While there are definitely some halloween treats your child should avoid, having braces doesn’t mean they should miss out on other yummy halloween treats.
Halloween candy you can eat with braces
When it comes to Halloween candy, it is best to be aware of what treats are safe and what treats are not recommended. Here are a few Halloween treats your child can have:
- Chocolate: Good news! Your kids don’t have to give up on chocolates as pure chocolate melts easily and is removed by brushing.
- Peanut butter cups: These Halloween treats are delicious, dissolve easily and are easily removed by brushing.
- Soft caramel: While caramel is not always a good choice, certain soft caramel and chocolate treats work fine. Just remind your kids to brush their teeth right after eating them.
- Brownies and soft cookies: These are delicious treats that are easy on your kids braces and are easy to remove by brushing.
Halloween candy to avoid with braces
Now let’s go over halloween candy that kids with braces should avoid:
- Hard candies: Hard candies that dissolve slowly are not a good choice as you expose your teeth to sugar over a long time. Also, if you bite them, you may damage your wires.
- Chewing gum: Chewing gum is never a good choice with braces as it is incredibly sticky and can get stuck on your braces.
- Frozen candy: Frozen candy may damage your wires or break your brackets which could lead to an orthodontic emergency.
- Popcorn and caramel corn
- Taffy and Sticky Sweets: Harder caramels, sticky sweets and gummy worms are bad news. They can stick to wires and bands and brushing may not get these off easily.
