If you have been looking for ways to straighten your teeth, you most likely would have come across Invisalign aligners and Lingual braces. Both options are effective at straightening your teeth discreetly, however, they are very different.
To give you a better understanding about which option may be right for you, we have summed up the main benefits and disadvantages of both options.
Lingual Braces
Lingual braces are quite similar to traditional braces except that Lingual braces are fixed to the inside of your teeth.
Advantages of lingual braces
- Lingual braces are virtually invisible! Even close up, people will struggle to spot them.
- Lingual braces are suitable for everyone. They have no age restrictions.
- Lingual braces give your orthodontist control over the movement of your teeth.
- Just like traditional braces, Lingual braces are fixed to your teeth so you don’t need to worry about removing them when you want to eat.
Disadvantages of Lingual braces
- Lingual braces are harder to clean as they are more hidden.
- Lingual braces can be more uncomfortable to begin with because of the closeness of the braces to the tongue.
- They tend to cost more than other options
Invisalign
Invisalign uses aligner trays made of BPA-Plastic to subtly and gradually move your teeth. The plastic is made smooth and comfortable, so wearing the tray is an easy process. The aligner trays are configured using 3-D images of your teeth to ensure it is just the right fit.
Advantages of Invisalign
- Invisalign trays can be removed, you can eat and drink without food getting stuck to the trays.
- Most patients tend to prefer Invisalign because the trays are clear. Many people may not even notice when a patient is wearing them.
- The Invisalign treatment can be a bit more comfortable than braces as there are no brackets that can make you feel uncomfortable.
- Because you can remove your aligners, it is easier to keep up a good oral hygiene routine and keep your teeth clean throughout your treatment.
Disadvantages of Invisalign
- Not every patient is suited for the Invisalign treatment. Patients that have bridgework, back tooth bite issues and other complex issues may not be suited for the Invisalign treatment.
- Invisalign is discreet, however, the aligners still cover the front of your teeth so it can still be seen by other people.
- Invisalign treatment requires patient commitment as the aligners only work if you have your trays on for at least 20-22 hours a day.
- Invisalign aligners dictate how your teeth will move and your orthodontist won’t have the same level of control they would with a fixed brace. This sometimes makes it difficult to achieve very precise results.
