You might have seen them being used by people who play contact sports or are involved in any activity that might pose a risk of injury to the mouth. In this article, we‘ll be discussing 3 types of mouthguards to protect your teeth.

First of all, what is a mouthguard?

A mouthguard is a piece of mouth protector placed inside your mouth to protect your mouth, especially your teeth, from impact. It is used mostly by people who engage in physical sporting activities. For instance, you may have seen a lot of boxers and wrestlers put on mouthguards.

When anything hits your mouth accidentally, your mouthguard will reduce the effect of the impact, and also protect your mouth from injuries. There are numerous brands and sizes of mouthguards, but they all come down to the following three mouthguard types:

1. Custom-fitted mouthguards

2. Boil and bite mouthguards

3. Stock mouthguards

1. Custom-fitted mouthguards

This is the best mouthguard type because it requires making an impression of the mouth of the intended user. The impression will be used to build the mouth guard. As you may already know, custom-built products are usually more expensive than the ones that have already been manufactured. Also, since it is built for your mouth, it will fit your mouth better than the other types. Hence, custom-fitted mouthguards offer more protection than other mouthguard types.

2. Boil and bite mouthguards

This type of mouthguard is sold in stores where sports gear is sold. It is made of thermoplastic material. After that, it is softened and placed in the mouth, while shaping it around the teeth to bring it close to custom-fitted mouth protectors. This type of mouthguard is also effective, but not as effective as the custom-fitted mouthguards.

3. Stock mouthguards

Stock mouthguards are the least costly type of mouth protectors. They are made in large numbers. The problem with this type of mouthguard is that it may not fit your mouth snugly, and that’s why it offers the least protection. Doctors typically do not recommend it as you have to adjust it to make it fit your mouth. Some users complain about its bulky appearance that makes talking and breathing a little difficult.

Generally, custom-fitted mouthguards are the most advisable option for you if you are considering mouthguards and especially if you have braces.
