Due to COVID-19 “lockdowns” in various communities, we are all disconnected from our usual lives this includes work, family, leisure, and of course regular visit to our healthcare professionals including our dentists.

Regular dental appointments are important, to ensure that overall dental health is in the best possible condition. Due to lockdowns, however, it might be a while before you can make your semi-annual trip to the dentist/ orthodontist. While we wait, there are many easy ways to keep your teeth healthy while at home (Do not worry, none of these require a dental drill or syringes).

  1. Avoid misguided DIY approaches to fix dental problems:

Dentists and orthodontics always recommend face-to-face office visits however, because of the lockdown, this may not be possible. Other than brushing, flossing, rinsing and in some cases oil-pulling, it is very rare that dentists recommend “DIY” for any dental treatment.  DIY teeth straightening/ braces or any other DIY approaches are not recommended as they can cause more harm to your teeth and can cause irreversible problems. It is crucial to get in touch with your dentist If you have any concerns with your teeth. Many dentists are offering remote consultations to help patients look after their dental health while they cannot physically go into the clinic.

  1. Remember the basics- Brush, floss, rinse:

It might sound obvious but remember to brush twice a day and stick to your daily flossing routine – even if your usual schedule has been affected by the lockdown. While brushing, make sure you clean all parts of your teeth for about 2-3 minutes. Do not forget to floss daily as when you do not floss, you are at risk for two major dental problems: Gingivitis and cavities between your teeth. Oral health should be always be a priority.

  1. Be mindful what you are eating during lockdown:

As we are all isolating, it may be tempting to over-indulge in sugary and acidic foods. To maintain optimal oral health, aim for a balanced diet and ensure you eat plenty of plants, lean protein, nuts, and healthy fats. If you can, cut down on sugar and acidic foods and drinks.

  1. Keep on top of your Post-op care at home:

To ensure proper healing and to avoid dental emergencies, ensure that you follow all Post-op care for your dental treatments such as braces, dental implants, extractions etc. Ensure that you take all medicine prescribed by your dentist as directed.  In case of any concerns, do not hesitate to contact your dentist.

  1. In case of an emergency, call your dentist:

Even though a number of dental clinics have not re-opened, if a dental emergency happens, call your dentist. Dental emergencies include treatment of oral-facial trauma, significant infection, prolonged bleeding, pain which cannot be managed by over the counter medications, or management of known/high risk malignancy. If you are unsure of if your situation qualifies as a dental emergency, confirm with your dentist – It is always safer.
